Description
A terrace of six houses built around 1815 by John Foulston as part of a planned square. The houses are constructed with incised stucco, have sill bands, dry slate roofs with projecting eaves, and stuccoed stacks over cross walls. They follow a double-depth plan.
The houses are three storeys high and were originally a symmetrical group. The central and end bays project forward, surmounted by triangular pediments. The pediment on the right side has been altered to a half-pediment due to the demolition of number 13 after damage during the Blitz. The houses are arranged in pairs, divided by the centre of the pediment, with blind openings in the centre. The arrangement is six bays wide, with a 1:3:2:3:2:1 bay arrangement.
Numbers 9 and 10 retain many of their original hornless sash windows with glazing bars; numbers 8 and 12 have later sash windows with horns, and number 11 has modern windows. The ground floor has round-arched openings with moulded arches and impost strings. Spoked fanlights are above the doors at numbers 9 and 10, while the others have plain fanlights and later panelled doors or modern doors.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The terrace forms part of a rare, virtually complete planned group of buildings by Foulston.
