Description

The Portishead Nautical National School dates to 1905, as indicated by an oval shield above the central doorway. The building is constructed of pebbledash to the end walls, red brick, and stone dressings, with a tiled roof. It incorporates a basement and three storeys, with a four-storey central tower featuring a two-tier cupola in white painted wood. The design includes recessed two-window bays with second-floor arcades on either side of the tower, and eleven windows to the wings, each with open segmental pediments. Tall Ionic pilasters are present, incorporating stone bases, capitals and entablatures, with a continuous stone cornice above the first floor. The basement extends beneath a wide terrace, supported by segmental arches. A rusticated stone doorway has a wide, chamfered reveal and an open segmental pediment depicting Neptune and Tritannia, accompanied by dolphin and lion heads. The upper tower windows are stone-dressed; those on the first and second floors are pedimented, while the third floor features circular windows. The school was designed by Edward Gabriel.
