Description

Clevedon Court is a historic building located on Tickenham Road, constructed by Sir John de Clevedon, who passed away in 1336. It is regarded as one of the most significant examples of early domestic architecture in England. The structure has undergone several alterations and additions over the years, including a new west wing designed by John Wake around 1570, further modifications after 1717, and a rebuilding of the west front between 1761 and 1788, with additional work in 1862. After a fire in 1882, architect C. E. Davis oversaw the rebuilding.

The current south front retains elements of the original house, featuring a two-storey buttressed porch with a plain parapet on the right and a pointed moulded archway with a portcullis. To the left is a two-storey projecting chapel range with original ogee reticulated tracery. The medieval hall still contains part of the original screens passage arrangement, which includes entrances to the kitchen and buttery, located behind the two projecting blocks. The great hall window between these blocks has been modified to a Tudor style, but evidence of an earlier pointed arch with tracery can be seen above.

The remainder of the south front showcases gabled ranges in the Elizabethan style, featuring stone mullioned and transomed windows. The top storey windows in the gables have pediments with carved heads and finials above. The gable end on the far right (east) of the front is in a plain vernacular style, complete with a large chimney breast and paired diagonal stacks, along with finials on either side of the gable. Attached to the rear of the east range is a tall gabled wing, along with various other gabled ranges, including kitchens and a two-storey porch on the rear elevation. The interior of the main building reflects excellent craftsmanship from different periods.

Clevedon Court and all its listed ancillary buildings, including the boundary walls, form a cohesive group.
