Description
The Black Swan Inn, located on the south side of High Street, is a building of historical significance that has origins dating back to the 18th century and has undergone alterations since then. It features walls made of Purbeck Stone that are colourwashed, topped with a Purbeck Stone roof and has brick stacks. The inn is two storeys tall with attics.
On the ground floor, there is an entrance door that has a flat stone canopy supported by brackets, along with three double-hung sash windows. The first floor also has similar double-hung sash windows. In the attic, there are two dormers; one has a pent roof while the other has a hipped roof, both fitted with double-hung sashes. A wrought iron hanging sign is positioned under the eaves.
To the west of the current entrance, there are indications of an earlier blocked door, with another blocked door further west. The building is elevated above the pavement level on a terrace, which is supported by a Purbeck Stone retaining wall and simple iron railings. At the rear, there is a two-storeyed gabled extension, also constructed of Purbeck Stone.
Attached to the main building are single-storey stone outbuildings, likely originally used as stables. These outbuildings also feature Purbeck Stone walls and roofs. Additionally, there is a Purbeck Stone boundary wall along High Street and Townsend Road, with stone gate piers marking the entrance leading to the yard on Townsend Road.
