Description

This is an 18th-century house, likely built before 1781, located on Durngate Street. It was probably converted into a shop during the late 18th or early 19th century and was believed to be in commercial use in 2009.

The building is constructed of colour-washed brick with a pitched tile roof and two brick chimney stacks. The southern portion of the building has undergone several changes over time. An 1889 Ordnance Survey map showed it as a rough "L" shape with outbuildings extending the south-east wing, and filling in the junction between the two wings. A south-west extension was added by 1902, but mostly removed by 1929, leaving a "C" shaped footprint similar to the present building.

The exterior is of colour-washed brick with a pitched tile roof and two brick chimney stacks. The first floor has two widely spaced windows with flush-framed 6/6 sash windows. The ground floor incorporates a 19th-century shop front centered on the doorway, featuring panelled pilasters and an entablature. The door is part-glazed with two moulded panels below. To the left of the doorway is another shop window with two panes, also topped with an entablature. A narrow door on the front elevation connects to a passage between this building and the adjacent property at No. 18.

The interior has not been inspected.

Durngate Street was largely built up by 1771, and this building is part of a group (Nos 18-20) that is thought to predate that date. Number 18, also converted to a shop, later reverted to solely domestic use in the 19th century.

The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural merit as a noteworthy example of an 18th-century Dorchester house, displaying alterations reflecting its later conversion to commercial use. It also holds group value with the adjacent houses at 18 and 20 Durngate Street, and with other nearby listed buildings.
