Description
The gatehouse at Bindon Abbey, dating from around 1794, is built in the Gothic style and incorporates materials from the ruins of Bindon Abbey. It features a central archway with two floors of rooms on either side. The stone walls are accented with brick dressings, and the roof is partly tiled and partly flat, topped with a parapet and brick battlements.
On the east elevation, there is a central brick Gothic arch with four recessed orders, flanked by brick and stone buttresses with pinnacles. Each side section has a window; the south window is now blocked, while the north window has lead lights in iron tracery. The west elevation mirrors the east with a similar brick arch and timber doors featuring traceried panels. Above the doors is the Coat of Arms of Cardinal Thomas Weld. Each side section also has a Gothic arched window with three recessed brick orders and timber tracery.
Internally, the central archway showcases Gothic plaster vaulting. The northern side section has lost its first floor and is now open to the roof, while the ground floor room features a large open fireplace that has been built up. The southern section retains its first floor and has a 19th-century fireplace on the ground floor. The gatehouse is noted for its picturesque appearance.
