Description

The Old Schoolhouse, now a private dwelling, was originally built in 1678 and endowed by John Young. It is constructed of dressed stone with a slate roof, stone gable copings, and stone stacks with cornices at cable ends, including one on the rear wall. The building is two storeys and has attics. It has five windows with three-light, ovolo-moulded stone mullions, fitted with 20th-century metal casements containing rectangular lead lights. Separate labels are present above the ground floor windows, and a continuous label runs above the first-floor windows. The front door, positioned slightly right of centre, has ovolo-moulded jambs and a depressed-arch within a square head, with a returned label above it. The door itself is plank and moulded-muntin, with renewed weatherboarding, dating back to the 17th century. A short, rendered rear wing features a slate roof with gable coping and 20th-century metal casements. A plank side door is also present. Inside, the east gable wall reveals an open fireplace embrasure with a cambered lintel. Above the front doorway, there was formerly an inscription recording the building’s construction and John Young’s endowment in 1678. A rear wing was added later.
