Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels, now serving as a school chapel, is a parish church that may have medieval origins but was largely remodeled in the 17th century, with a datestone indicating 1650. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a stone-slate roof. The church has an undifferentiated nave and chancel, along with a west porch. The east window consists of three cinquefoiled lights with Perpendicular tracery beneath a pointed head. The other windows are made up of two lancet lights with plain spandrel lights under pointed heads. The porch includes a south doorway with a lugged, moulded architrave, topped by an unusual entablature featuring a highly pulvinated frieze, which supports a moulded elliptical archway. There is a double 17th-century plank door.
Inside, the church has a plastered barrel roof and a 19th-century wall painting at the east end by Mrs. Symer of the mansion, along with 19th-century glass and other fittings that are largely from the 19th century. Notably, architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner questions the 17th-century dating of the main body of the church, suggesting a later period instead.
