Description
This is a group of three table tombs located to the southwest of Holy Rood Church in Buckland Newton. They are probably from the early 18th century.
The first tomb is situated 1 meter south of the south aisle, to the west of the porch. It is made of ashlar stone and features a flat top with a cavetto mould and rounded ends. One end displays a cartouche with a coat of arms, while the other end is adorned with a skull and crossbones, along with bats' wings. The inscription is set in a rectangular panel, which is flanked by side panels that feature hourglasses and crossed bones.
The second and third tombs are approximately 2 meters southwest of the southwest aisle corner and are likely from the 18th century. These are made of stone and have ridged tops with cyma moulds and rectangular panels. One of these tombs includes fluted angle pilasters and divided side panels. Both tombs appear to be dedicated to members of the Hopkins family.
