Description
The Buckland Newton War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Rood, which is a Grade I-listed building. Positioned near the entrance gate and in front of the church tower, the memorial features a rough-hewn granite Celtic cross with a plain wheel-head, standing approximately 2 meters tall. A reversed sword is carved in relief on the front face of the cross. The cross shaft is set on a simple plinth, which in turn rests on a square base at ground level. The plinth has inscriptions in dressed panels using applied metal lettering.
On the north-west face, the inscription reads: "THIS CROSS HAS BEEN ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF BUCKLAND NEWTON IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" followed by 15 names. The south-west face lists "1939-1945" with 3 names and "1914-1918" with 1 name.
