Description
Felthams is a house that was originally a farmhouse, built in the 17th century with additions and alterations from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features rubble walling set in clay with a clay render and a plain tile roof. The building stands two storeys high with an attic.
On the entrance front, there is a doorway to the right of the centre, which is sheltered by a gabled 20th-century porch and features a half-glazed 19th-century door. Flanking the doorway are sash windows, and on the first floor, there are three additional sash windows. To the left, there is a bay window added in the 18th century, with windows on both floors, and further left is a 20th-century colour-washed extension. All the sash windows on this front are 19th-century, horned, and consist of four panes. The east gable end has a four-pane sash window on the ground floor and a two-pane 20th-century attic window. The rear of the house has an extensive outshut with a catslide roof.
Inside, the cross passage features a boarded 17th-century partition. There are several original boarded doors, along with a chamfered and end-stopped main beam and joists from the 17th century. The original section of the house has wide floorboards and rounded chimney breasts, as well as a complete 17th-century roof with trenched purlins and rafters. The ground floor living room contains a rebuilt ingle-nook fireplace and an 18th-century china cupboard built into the thickness of the rear wall. The staircase in the cross passage is from the 19th century.
Felthams is a good example of a 17th-century yeoman's farmhouse that remains largely intact, with later additions that are interesting and do not significantly disrupt the original structure.
