Description
There are three churchyard monuments located approximately 7 meters south of the Church of St. Andrew. These monuments date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are made of Portland stone.
The first monument is a chest tomb featuring a thick ledger slab with a cyma mould. It has a bold incised inscription on the south side, a heavy square end on the east, and a moulded base resting on a flat platform. The date "16--" is partially visible but generally worn and overgrown as of May 1991.
The second monument is also a chest tomb, which has a heavy ledger slab with a moulded edge and quarter balusters on the chest. It displays a skull and crossbones on the east side, an oval panel with a leaf surround on the north and south sides, and a plain west side, all set on a moulded base with a very large deep platform. While there are no legible inscriptions or dates, this tomb is designed in a mid-18th century style.
The third monument is a thick headstone adorned with a cartouche, commemorating someone named Pearce, aged 58, who died in 1745. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments records various other monuments in the area, but these have either disappeared or become overgrown.
