Description
The Sixpenny Handley War Memorial is a war memorial made of Ham Hill limestone, standing approximately 4 meters high. It is located within a grassed enclosure by the roadside in front of the Church of St Mary, which is also listed at Grade II*. The memorial is surrounded by a chain supported by low stone bollards.
It features a plain Latin cross set on an octagonal plinth, which rests on a three-stepped octagonal base. The front face of the plinth is inscribed with the words "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF 23 MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth, listed below their year of death. Additionally, the names of three men who fell during the Second World War are also inscribed on the plinth, beneath the dates 1939 - 1945.
