Description

The Moorings is a house that was converted into flats, originally built around 1905 by E.S. Prior and converted in the late 20th century. The building is rendered and features a large slate hipped roof with deep bellcast eaves and rendered axial stacks with moulded cornices.

The structure has a rectangular double-depth plan, with a central entrance and stair hall flanked by two principal rooms at the front and smaller service rooms behind. It is designed in the Domestic Revival Queen Anne Style and stands two storeys high with an attic.

The west front is symmetrical with three bays, featuring slate-hung canted bay windows on either side, which have had their sashes replaced. The central doorway is framed by a bolection moulded architrave, with panelled reveals, a glazed door, side-lights, and a large moulded canopy supported by brackets. Above the door is a Venetian window with an enriched keyblock and sashes that include glazing bars. The roof has two slate-hung gables that are part of the hipped roof, with a dormer in between that has a small semi-circular pediment. The flat roof is railed and includes a central glazed cupola topped with a restored weathervane.

On the right-hand side, there are sash windows complete with glazing bars, and there is an attached former boathouse that has been converted into a dwelling. The rear of the building features one and two-light sash windows with glazing bars, glazed double doors, and late 20th-century flat roof dormers.

Inside, although converted into flats, many original features remain, including panelled doors with brass knobs, an open-well moulded string staircase with square newels and robust turned balusters, and several original chimneypieces, two of which have decorative tiles. The bay windows at the front have pilastered frames.
