Description

The remains of Marshwood Castle are located 50 metres west of Lodge House Farmhouse. This structure includes the remains of an angle tower, with stone rubble walls that have a mortared core, standing up to 10 feet high in some places. The plan features three and a half sides of the angle tower, measuring 40 feet by 29 feet, situated in the south-west corner of what was originally a moated enclosure. The facing stones of the walls have not survived, and the walls themselves were originally between 6 feet and 10 feet thick. Marshwood Castle was associated with the Honour and Barony of the Norman Mandeville family, which was the only barony in Dorset. It may be identifiable with Wootton Fitzpaine mentioned in the Domesday Book. The Mandevilles later became Earls of Essex during the reign of Stephen and the title became extinct during the reign of Richard I. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
