Description
No 115, known as Bridge House, including the parapet wall, was built in 1768 by James Rooker, who was the first Independent Minister. This building served as his home and as an academy for training ministers, making it a rare example of a Dissenting Academy and a precursor to Western College in Plymouth. The front is made of ashlar stone and features a hipped tile roof. It has two storeys and attics, with a modillion eaves cornice. The plinth and eaves cornice return around giant angle pilasters. There are five ranges of sash windows with painted stone architraves and sills, along with two hipped dormers. The entrance has a panelled door with panelled reveals, a moulded architrave, and a hood supported by voluted console brackets. The east elevation includes four cased sashes with glazing bars, and there are casement windows behind them. The rear section has an old tile roof. In front, there is a store parapet wall with small gatepiers. The buildings from Nos 61 to 115 (odd) and the wall from the east end of No 115 form a group.
