Description
Blackmanston Farm House is a detached farmhouse dating from the late 16th century. The east room, which was originally the kitchen, was rebuilt or added in the early 17th century. A rear service wing at the east end was constructed in the 18th century or later. There was a former stair turret at the rear of the main block, which has since been demolished. The building features rough ashlar and rubble stone walls, stone slate roofs, and stone stacks, some of which have been rebuilt in brick.
The farmhouse has a three-room and cross-passage plan and stands two storeys high with attics. The main elevation includes a full-height gabled porch with moulded coping and a 4-centred arched doorway. On the first floor, there are two 2-light mullioned windows and a small blocked window in the attic gable. To the west of the porch, the ground floor has two 4-light mullioned windows with lead lights, which are under hood moulds, lighting the Hall and Parlour. The first floor also has two similar 2-light windows, and the attic features one gabled dormer with casements.
To the east of the porch, a ground floor window has been blocked by a late fireplace. There is a small lean-to extension at the west end. The rear wing consists of a south section that is one storey and has an attic, while the north section is single-storey. It includes casement windows and a loft door under a gabled dormer. Blackmanston Farm House is a good example of a traditional farmhouse.
