Description
7 Durngate Street is a Grade II listed house from the 18th century, likely built before 1771. The building is finished in stucco and features a pitched tile roof with a high brick chimney shared with No. 6. Its rectangular plan, which narrows slightly towards the north, has remained unchanged since the first Ordnance Survey map was published in 1889. Until at least 1902, Nos. 6 and 7 shared a rear courtyard.
The exterior of this two-storey house is divided into three regular bays, each containing two ranges of 8/8 sash windows set in moulded frames. Above the centrally placed front door at first-floor level is a blind window. The roof features a casement dormer window with a hipped tile roof.
Durngate Street is located in the heart of Dorchester, an area that has been occupied since Roman times. Hutchins's map from 1771 shows the street as nearly fully built up on both sides. Although there are later buildings on the street, No. 7 is believed to pre-date 1771.
This house is designated at Grade II due to its architectural significance as a well-preserved example of a modest two-storey house from the 18th century, and it holds group value with adjacent listed buildings and others in Durngate Street.
