Description

No. 63 High West Street is a Grade II listed building, dating from the early 19th century. It features a lower three-storey red brick front with a hipped tile roof. The ground floor has a projecting shopfront with bowed ends, a fascia, and a dentil cornice, although the glazing bars have been removed. On the first and second floors, there are three-light sash windows with wide painted surrounds and painted aprons. The first-floor window includes pilaster strips between the lights and a moulded entablature, while a moulded wood eaves cornice adds detail to the roofline. The entrance door has two moulded panels and ornamental frosted glass.

The rear of the building appears to date from the 17th century, constructed with Ridgeway or Portland rubble on the ground floor and timber framing with pink brick nogging on the first floor. This section is two storeys high and has a pitched tile roof with a 19th-century brick stack. There are three ranges of modern casements with glazing bars. The original coped stone gable end features kneelers and a finial at the north end.

No. 63 is part of a group that includes Nos. 48 to 65A, the Shire Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Museum, St. Peter's Church, and a monument to William Barnes located in the churchyard immediately south of the West Tower.
