Description

There are three coffin-type stone monuments in the churchyard immediately north of four headstones, dedicated to members of the Hardy family. One monument is for Mary, the daughter of Thomas and Jemima Hardy, who passed away in 1914. Another monument contains the heart of Thomas Hardy, the author, who died in 1928; this monument also commemorates his first wife, Emma, who died in 1912, and his second wife, Florence, who died in 1937. The third monument is for Thomas Hardy, who died in 1892, and his wife Jemima, who died in 1904. All three monuments share a similar design, featuring a solid hipped slab set on two moulded steps. They are included for their historic interest.
