Description
Wool Bridge is a road bridge dating from around the 16th century, with later repairs and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from various types of ashlar stone and red brick on the south arch.
The bridge features a multi-span, curved design, originally comprising five arches, but it has an additional 19th-century flood arch to the south, which is aligned differently. The main segmental arches are supported by three wide ribs beneath each arch, with the largest arch spanning just over 15 feet. There are four river piers on each side, featuring large cutwaters on the upstream side and smaller ones downstream. These piers rise to a low parapet that includes pedestrian refuges, and the parapet is topped with moulded coping.
Notable inscriptions include the initials F.T. and the date 1688, which are on a stone that has been reset in modern brickwork, and an 1806 date on the face of the far right end pillar. The surface of the bridge is finished with modern tarmacadam.
