Description

Lyscombe Cottage, located immediately southwest of Lyscombe Chapel, is a detached cottage that was originally built in the 16th century as a residence for the priest. It was extended to the west in the 17th century, and the west wall of this addition was repaired and had new windows added in the early 19th century. The cottage is currently derelict and has no roof.

The walls are constructed of flint rubble with some brick detailing. The east wall features a prominently projecting chimney breast, which has a splayed section above the first floor supported by a stone corbel. To the north of the chimney breast, there is a stone vice with a small loop on the east side, consisting of a chamfered vertical slit that widens into a circle at the center, overlooking the former south doorway of the chapel. Other windows and doorways in the eastern part of the cottage were altered and rebuilt in brick during the early 19th century.

On the north side, there is a brick doorway with a reset timber surround dating to around the 16th century, featuring a chamfered triangular head and jambs. The 17th-century western section of the south wall contains three-light stone mullioned windows. Near the southwest corner, there is a scratch dial. The early 19th-century repairs to the west wall include two first floor windows with 4-centred brick heads and jambs. In the gable, there are two reset fragments from the 15th or early 16th century, including part of a 4-centred stone window head with trefoil-headed lights and a small stone panel with paired ogee-headed openings.

Inside, the ground floor room of the eastern part of the cottage had, until recently, an original open timber ceiling divided into six panels by deeply cambered intersecting beams and plates. An open fireplace to the east features a deep cambered and chamfered bressummer with chamfered stone jambs that have run-out stops.
