Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a chapel built in 1848 by Benjamin Ferrey. It is constructed from coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings and features a gable-ended tiled roof with stone copings and bearing cross finials. The nave has an embattled parapet, and there are plinths and string courses at the parapet, plinth, and below the windows. The layout includes a nave, chancel, and south vestry.
The west bellcote is gabled and has two cinquefoiled openings. The nave windows consist of two cinquefoiled lights under two-centred heads, while the north and south chancel windows are lancets. The east window features three cinquefoiled lights with 'perpendicular' tracery. All major windows have labels with carved head stops. The vestry includes a square-headed window with two trefoiled lights and a door with a four-centred head. The west door is moulded with a two-centred head and continuous jambs. There are buttresses at the angles and between the nave windows.
Inside, notable features include a two-centred moulded chancel arch, with the inner order running into respond shafts that have moulded capitals and bases, and outer orders that are continuous with the jambs. The bellcote arch is also two-centred and moulded, with respond shafts bearing moulded bases and capitals. The church has hammer beam roofs with moulded purlins and wall plates, and the nave features wind-braced purlins. A late 12th century monolithic cylindrical stone font with flutings on its cylindrical stem is present, along with other 19th-century fittings.
