Description

Font le Roi is a farmhouse that was originally a gatehouse, dating from the 15th century, with a southwestern range added around 1600 and extensive alterations made in the 18th century. The gatehouse features coursed rubble walls and a gable-ended tiled roof with stone slate verges and an end brick stack. It has a large gate opening supported by timber beams. To the left of this opening is a blocked 2-centred, chamfered stone archway with continuous jambs, and above it is a single-light rectangular window with chamfered jambs, which is similar to the window above the gateway. The right side of the range is mostly hidden by 19th-century additions, though part of a 15th-century window can still be seen.

The 17th-century range has coursed rubble walls and two forward-projecting wings. It features stone-slated, hipped roofs with brick stacks where the wings meet the main range. The space between the wings is filled with 18th-century brickwork. On the ground floor to the left, there is a 3-light, straight chamfered stone mullioned window with leaded lights, above which is a 20th-century 2-light casement window with horizontal glazing bars. The 18th-century infill includes a flush panelled door with a rectangular fanlight below and a 2-light casement with leaded lights above. To the right on the ground floor, there is an 8-light window that wraps around the ends of the wing, with the outer four lights blocked. This window features ovolo moulded mullions with leaded lights and a cornice above. There is a similar 3-light window above with a returned label. The rear of the house has been largely remodelled in the 18th century. Inside, the south-west room contains a 17th-century moulded plaster ceiling that was restored in 1938.
