Description

Downs View is a house that was formerly the Red Lion public house. It dates from the late 17th century and was remodeled in the late 18th or early 19th century, with an early 20th-century porch added later. The building is constructed of colour-washed rendered stone and cob, topped with a slate roof. It has a single room depth and features a wide outshut at the rear beneath a catslide roof. There are projecting stacks at both gable ends, with a massive off-centre axial stack. The original late 17th-century structure likely had two or three rooms, but changes in the front plane and a smaller stack on the right gable end suggest it was rebuilt or extended in the late 18th or early 19th century.

On the right gable end, there is a lean-to addition with gable coping stones. The house is two storeys high with a three-window range and two entrances at the front. An off-centre early 20th-century enclosed porch features a gabled slate roof and vertical boards in the gable, with double doors that have diagonal boarding and stained glass panels depicting a sailing ship. There is an additional entrance door on the front left. The ground floor has two windows, one on either side of the porch; the window to the left is a two-light casement with a slate sill, while the taller window to the right is a late 18th-century two-light casement with a drip ledge. The upper storey has three windows, which are two-light sliding casements with glazing bars. An oven is located at the left gable end, and the right gable end is slate hung and colour-washed.
