Description

Higher Hill is a house that was originally a farmhouse, built in the 17th century and remodeled in the 18th century, with 20th-century additions at the rear. The building features a rendered slatestone and cob exterior, topped with a slate roof laid in diminishing courses, although the roof is now entirely painted with black fiberglass. The structure is one room deep and has a wide cross passage that now serves as a stair hall. There are two rooms to the right of the passage and one to the left, with gable end stacks, the left gable end stack projecting. A wing at the rear left forms an L shape. The rear of the main range includes infill areas for a buttery and study, which have a lower floor level, and a dining room at the rear right, possibly converted from an attached farm building.

The house is two stories tall and has a three-window range with two porches. One 20th-century porch leads into its own passage, while the second porch leads into the right ground floor room, which is enclosed with a slate gabled roof. The ground floor windows on the left and center are 20-pane sashes with drip ledges, while the ground floor right window is a 20th-century casement. The upper storey windows on the left and right are also 20th-century casements, and the center window is a 20-pane sash, with slate sills throughout. The windows on the rear wing have been renewed.

Inside, there is plain 18th-century painted panelling in the stair hall. The right gable end room features a fireplace with a truncated fireplace beam and 19th-century ceiling beams. The buttery retains its original slate floor. Upstairs, the encased principals of a nine-bay roof are visible, with a collar and rafter roof that is halved and face pegged to the wing.
