Description
Bosahan Lodge is a principal entrance lodge or cottage ornée, built around the late 19th century. It features dressed serpentine stone brought to course, with granite quoins and lintels. The roofs are thatched with wheat-reed and have shaped and pierced wooden barge boards that include alternate cusps and roundels. The building has three linked diagonally set stone chimney shafts with moulded cornices located over the middle section, between the main part and a wing.
The plan is irregular and T-shaped, consisting of three rooms. The large principal room is located to the left and has a canted bay at the front, while a smaller room is to the right. An entrance passage is situated between these rooms, leading to a large room in the rear wing on the left, which features a lean-to bay window at the back and a small porch in the angle between the right room and the rear wing. The lodge is a single storey plus attic, which is lit by gable windows.
The north-east front is irregular with two windows. The doorway is positioned to the right of the middle and has a ledged door. An open thatched porch is supported by two rustic posts and features a barge board similar to those on the other gables. To the left of the doorway is a four-light canted bay window beneath a thatched outshut hood, and to the right is a two-light window. All windows are casements with their original latticed leaded panes. Above the doorway, there is a carving of a soldier standing behind ramparts.
The gate piers are made of dressed granite, square in plan with chamfered corners and moulded ogee-headed caps. The flanking walls are curved and constructed from vertically-set pebbles. The wrought iron gates, which feature elliptical and scrolled bracing, are contemporary with the lodge. This building is one of the structures associated with the former Bosahan House, which was demolished in the 1950s.
