Description
A Wesleyan chapel, dated 1880, constructed of rendered stone rubble with a granite ashlar front. The building has an interlocking concrete tile roof with gabled ends, and a parapeted gable at the front. The plan comprises a large rectangular chapel with a first-floor auditorium above ground-floor rooms, including a Sunday School. Both levels are accessed via a porch on the south front, and the rostrum and organ gallery are located at the north end.
The south front features three gables and a moulded granite cornice with a trefoil finial. Rusticated granite corner pilasters are present, and the centre of the front breaks forward to create an arcade on the ground floor, featuring slender granite columns, moulded extrados, and keyblocks. Above the arcade, a large round-headed window with round-headed lights and foiled tracery is set within the cornice. Smaller round-headed windows flank the central window on both the ground and first floors, with keyblocks on the first floor and corbelled heads below. A stone plaque inscribed "Wesley Chapel 1880" is set within the gable. The porch has a central 5-light window with margin glazing bars, flanked by doorways to ground-floor rooms and double doors with overlights, providing access to the auditorium. All windows and doors within the porch retain their original margin glazing bars. Three large segmental-headed first-floor windows are present on either side of the chapel, alongside straight-headed sash windows with glazing bars on the ground floor.
The contemporary front courtyard wall has a dressed granite plinth and granite ashlar above; it curves inwards towards a gateway with monolithic granite piers, chamfered corners, and moulded pyramid caps. Ornate cast-iron gates and similar terminal piers are present at each end; original railings were formerly in place.
Inside, the first-floor auditorium has a coved plaster ceiling with moulded ribs and decorated light roses. Original box pews are arranged in a semi-circle, with central pews, panelled fronts, and shaped bench ends. An elaborate rostrum features a semi-circular reader’s desk with an arcaded front and a cast-iron balustrade. A cast-iron balustrade also runs in front of the rostrum, with the organ gallery located behind. The ground-floor rooms were used for the Sunday School and other purposes and are supported by cast iron columns.
