Description

SW 63 SW BREAGE GODOLPHIN

4/52 Piscina and apple crusher at approx 11 metres north of Godolphin House

GV II

Piscina standing on cider crusher base to form centrepiece. The piscina is C15 and the apple crusher C18 or earlier. Dressed granite. The monolith piscina has square base, octagonal shaft and octagonal moulded capital with central bowl and drain. Peg holes remain from vanished C18 sundial. The apple crusher base, also a monolith, is of the usual design: round with central bearing level with the outer rim and a wide annular channel for the granite runner (which exists as part of seat in the garden). This piscina may be from the former chapel at Godolphin (dedicated to Our Lady, licence reputedly 1300). The apple crusher base and a cider press base (now built into paving at the rear of the house) come from the manor Cider House (qv).
