Description
The piscina and apple crusher, located approximately 11 meters north of Godolphin House, are notable features of historical significance. The piscina dates from the 15th century, while the apple crusher is from the 18th century or earlier. Both are made of dressed granite.
The piscina is a monolithic structure with a square base, an octagonal shaft, and an octagonal moulded capital that includes a central bowl and drain. It still shows peg holes from a now-missing 18th-century sundial. The apple crusher base is also monolithic and features a round design with a central bearing level with the outer rim, along with a wide annular channel for the granite runner, which is incorporated as part of a seat in the garden.
This piscina may have originated from the former chapel at Godolphin, which was dedicated to Our Lady, with a license reportedly granted in 1300. The apple crusher base, along with a cider press base that is now built into the paving at the rear of the house, comes from the manor's Cider House.
