Description
Venton House is a house dating to circa 1810, with alterations made in the 20th century. The front gable is built of painted rubble, while the sides and rear gable end are rendered. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, with a stack positioned at each gable end. The house has a double-depth plan, featuring two principal rooms facing the garden, and an entrance on the left leading to a lateral corridor and staircase. The corridor separates the front rooms from a study to the rear left and a service room to the rear right, behind which is a single-story wash house wing.
The house is two stories with an attic. The front features a gable entrance with a Doric portico, positioned slightly off-center to the left, and incorporates a panelled and glazed door with a fanlight featuring splayed and looped glazing bars. A small plate-glass sash is located at ground floor to the right, and a 24-pane sash is positioned at attic level. The symmetrical garden front has three windows, all with 16-pane sashes at the first floor, and 20th-century replacements at ground floor, incorporating a plinth and rusticated pilasters. A central segmental-headed dormer window contains a plate-glass sash. The left side has 16-pane sashes at ground and first floor, alongside a tall, narrow 24-pane sash lighting the stairwell and a central panelled and glazed door. A single-story wash house is attached to the left, featuring a 12-pane and 16-pane sash, and a central segmental-headed door. The rear gable end includes a plate-glass sash at ground floor to the left and a similar 24-pane attic sash to the right.
The interior features an open-well staircase with turned balusters, a ramped handrail, and a scroll-moulded string. A fluted newel is present at ground floor. The front right room has a reeded dado rail. Both front rooms display a floral plaster frieze with beading and acanthus ornamentation, along with 19th-century marble chimney pieces. The second room features a plaster frieze depicting grapes and vine leaves. Both rooms have 6-panelled doors, and panelled shutters to the windows. A section of the staircase extends from the first floor to the attic, featuring stick balusters. The first room on the first floor has a floral plaster frieze, and segmental-headed cupboards to the right and left of the fireplace, displaying acanthus plasterwork. A marble chimneypiece is also present. The room at the end to the right has panelled cupboards with drawers. All rooms on the first floor have 6-panelled doors, while the second floor rooms have 4-panelled doors. The second floor also incorporates partition walls with vertical panelling.
The plasterwork within the house reflects an earlier 18th-century tradition, demonstrating a high quality of craftsmanship.
