Description
The former school, located about 10 metres northeast of Flagstaff, is now used as a garage and storage shed. It was originally built in the late 17th century or early 18th century and underwent significant remodelling in the early 19th century, with few later alterations. The structure is made of slatestone rubble, cob, and features a granite bellcote. The roof on the left end is covered with slate and has a hip, while the right side has corrugated iron over thatch with a gable end.
The building likely started as a three-room plan, with the left end room heated by an axial stack and the right end room heated by a gable end stack. It was later remodelled into a school layout, featuring a small room on the left with an axial stack, a large central schoolroom with a bay that serves as the porch entrance, and a small room on the right heated by a gable end stack. The design reflects Gothic style elements.
The exterior is single-storey and asymmetrical. The left end room is set back and has metamorphic stone quoins, a single light window, and 20th-century garage doors, along with a rubble axial stack. The central schoolroom features two pointed arch windows with 2-light casements and Y tracery, which are 20th-century replicas of early 19th-century windows, complete with recessed brick heads. The gabled bay on the right has a similar 2-light casement and a partially removed bellcote. There is a 4-centred arched door on the right side, with raised studded battens, and an early 19th-century 2-light casement window with Y tracery and leaded lights, along with internal panelled shutters. The right end wall has a stepped external stack, but the chimney has been removed. The left end has a small single-storey rubble addition, partly from the 20th century, while the rear wall is mainly constructed of cob.
Inside, the central schoolroom has a ceiling, and the end room features a fireplace with a 19th-century cast iron grate. The left end room once had a rear window and a fireplace on the inner wall, with remnants of an oven; it also includes a well with a pump and a granite trough.
