Description
The accommodation bridge located 12 metres south of Wainsford is a small railway bridge built in 1859 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It features roughly coursed slatestone on inclined and raking abutments on either side of a segmental vaulted cartway that is 7 feet wide. The bridge has short flank walls designed for gates, abutments, and a low over-sailing parapet that is capped with granite copings. The north parapet has been widened with concrete and includes a guard-rail. This bridge is part of a series of viaducts designed by Brunel on the Plymouth to Truro line, notable for the attention to detail given to even farm access routes through embankments. It is included for its group value alongside the Clinnock, Derricombe, and Largin viaducts.
