Description

This is a farmhouse, originally built around 1610. It was likely constructed for Edward Trelawney, as evidenced by a Trelawney coat of arms with the datestone 1610 above the front door. The main structure is stone rubble, rendered on the front elevation, with stone rubble and cob used on the higher end of the cross wing. The roof is covered with bituminous-coated scantle slate, with a hipped lower end, a gable to the front projection of the cross wing, and a hipped rear end to the cross wing. Two projecting stone rubble chimney stacks flank the front entrance of the main range; one lower, right-hand chimney stack has a shaft removed, while a chimney stack with a rendered brick shaft is located in the front gable of the cross wing.

The main range originally comprised two rooms with a central through passage, which has since been blocked off at the rear, and a 19th-century staircase inserted. Both rooms were heated by the front lateral chimney stacks. A cross wing projects to the front and rear at the higher end, forming an overall ‘T’ shape plan. A centrally blocked doorway on the higher side wall of the cross wing leads to a wide passage, now used as a dairy.

The front elevation is asymmetrical with three windows, and has a gable-ended cross wing to the left. All windows are 19th-century casements with glazing bars and crown glass. The ground floor has a three-light window on the right, which is a 20th-century replacement, and a two-light window on the first floor. A passage doorway is located to the right of the centre, featuring a 19th-century panelled door flanked by lateral chimney stacks, with the right-hand stack truncated. The inner face of the cross wing to the left has a single three-light ground floor casement and two two-light first floor casements. The higher side of the cross wing features an asymmetrical two-window front with a plank door on the left, a two-light casement dairy window with a timber lintel, a blocked door opening with a 19th-century two-light casement and timber lintel, and a slate plaque containing the Trelawney coat of arms and datestone. A slate string is positioned above the ground floor. A stone rubble lean-to porch is on the right, with a two-light casement, and is topped by two 19th-century two-light casements.

The interior has plastered ceilings and 20th-century chimney pieces, with wallpapered lath and plaster screens flanking the former through passage. A 19th-century staircase is located in the through passage and another 19th-century staircase is in the cross wing. The feet of the principals are boxed-in. The roof structure was not inspected in its entirety.

A memorial to Edward Trelawney, dated 1630, can be found in Pelynt Parish Church. The inscription reads: "Here lies an honest lawyer, wot ye what. A thing for all the world to wonder at."
