Description
The milestone north of Hatt is a late 18th-century granite structure that is rectangular in shape with a rounded top. The dressed west face features incised black painted lettering that originally indicated the distances to Callington and Saltash. However, the lower part of the milestone, which marked the distance to Saltash (4 miles), has been broken off and the stone has been re-set. The remaining inscription now reads: C 5½ / S.
This milestone is part of a series erected by the Callington Turnpike Trust, established by an Act of Parliament in 1764. It is the only marker placed on a short turnpike extension added by the Trust in the late 18th century to connect their road network with a turnpike of the Saltash Trust.
This milestone is recognized for its historical significance as a legible example of a late 18th-century milestone in its original location. It has good group value with other listed mileposts from the Callington Turnpike Trust and serves as a physical marker of the area's transport history.
