Gatehouse And Barn About 3 Metres East Of Marsland Manor And Walls Between Gatehouse And East Front Of Marsland Manor

The gatehouse, barn, and walls located about 3 meters east of Marsland Manor date from the late 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. They are constructed of roughly-squared stone that has been brought to course, with slate roofs and some cob at high levels in the barn. The gatehouse, which is partly rebuilt in 19th-century brick, forms the east side of the forecourt to Marsland Manor. The stone rubble walls create the north and south sides of the forecourt, and the barn is attached to the north end of the gatehouse.

The gatehouse features a gabled roof at the south end and includes a stone newel stair with a polyphant stair light that leads from the forecourt to the first floor. Above the old wooden gateway beam, the gatehouse has a 19th-century two-light casement window with eight panes per light, positioned off-centre in the east wall. The tall stone walls on the north and south sides of the forecourt each have doorways, with the south wall doorway providing access to the garden south of Marsland Manor.

The barn, which adjoins the gatehouse at the north, has gabled ends and features a large 17th-century timber doorframe on its west front, complete with a slightly cambered head jointed to the jambs. The doorway is sheltered by a slate canopy supported on timber brackets, and it includes a wooden plank stable door. There are ventilators on either side of the door, although the one on the right is blocked. The upper two steps leading to the barn have been replaced with concrete blockwork.
