Description
This chest tomb, located 3 metres east of the east end of the Church of St Symphorian, dates from around 1847. It features slatestone walls topped with a plain, uninscribed slate lid. The tomb is square in shape, and the north side includes reused stone fragments that form a blocked doorway. Supporting the hollow chamfered granite arch stone or coping stone are moulded freestone capitals, likely taken from gate piers dating to around 1700. Inside the doorway, there is a granite gable finial adorned with three circles, which resembles a similar design found on a village well. Both the finial and the doorway fragments are likely Medieval pieces that were removed from the church during its restoration in 1847.
