Description
Chyrond is a round cottage built around 1820, featuring painted rubble and cob with a wheatreed thatch conical roof. The cottage has a one-room plan and stands two storeys tall. It has an arched entrance on the south side with a 20th-century door, but retains the original Gothick tympanum detail above. There is a thatched open porch supported by posts. A low arched head window above the entrance breaks the eaves line, and the cottage has 20th-century windows with glazing bars. The original arched window openings on the east side, facing the road, have stone borders. The roof is topped with a bobbin turned cross finial. The interior has not been inspected. Chyrond is one of five round houses in Veryan, built by Hugh Rowe from Lostwithiel for the Reverend Jeremiah Trist, reportedly one for each of his five daughters. The round design is said to have been intended to deter the activities of the Devil, although it was likely chosen for economic reasons.
