Description

A farmhouse with associated courtyard walls, garden walls and an earth closet, dating from the 17th century with alterations in the 18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings, and has grouted scantle slate roofs topped with dressed granite stacks on the gable ends. Some stacks have granite copings, and one has a brick shaft with cast-iron ogee gutters.

The building's plan is an irregular inverted F-shape. The front section comprises three rooms, with a passage between the right and central rooms and large fireplaces at each end. Two parallel wings extend from the middle rear and join at the rear, forming a narrow courtyard. The right-hand wing has thicker walls and retains some original 17th-century features. Each wing has a central doorway facing into the courtyard. A high, coped wall of ashlar stone connects the two wings at the rear, incorporating a chamfered doorway dating from the 17th century, with a well situated just inside. A field wall runs parallel to the rear wall, pierced by a squint, and a square-plan, 19th-century earth closet is set into this wall to the rear left.

The east front has two storeys and a regular four-window arrangement, with a doorway between the left-hand windows and to the right of the middle window. Ledged doors are present. A circa 1800 12-pane sash window is above the right-hand doorway, with later horned sashes to the right and a 20th-century casement to the left. The north side of the left-hand rear wing has a circa mid-18th century 16-pane hornless sash window with thick glazing bars, alongside some circa 1800 sashes. Some openings have been blocked or altered. A 20th-century building within the courtyard obscures a 17th-century two-light mullioned window outer frame in the right-hand wing.

The interior has been little altered since the 19th century and retains much 18th-century carpentry and joinery, as well as some features from the same period, including a turned-baluster staircase in the left-hand wing, fielded panelling, chair rails and two-panel doors.

Rubble walls enclose the gardens to the front and left, and adjoin the parallel rear wall. An earth closet with a pyramidal slate roof stands nearby.
