Description

This chest tomb, dating from 1794, is located 3 metres north of the east end of the Church of St Symphorian and commemorates Maria Kempe. It features a base made of slatestone rubble and a limestone lid that has a cavetto and torus moulded border, along with an inscribed slate insert. The tomb is rectangular in shape. The inscription reads: "Worth and Virtue claim the Pitying tear Well may the husband pour his sorrows here Yet cease to mourn, Let resignation boast That Heaven has gained what that fond Man has lost."
