Description
27 and 29 Fore Street is a pair of probable merchants' houses, or possibly one large house, dating from the early 17th century. The buildings have rubble side walls and ground floors, with plastered and timber-framed fronts on the first and second floors, featuring jet ties on the second floor. They have bitumen-grouted slate roofs that end at the street.
The houses have a deep plan, deeper on the left, with two parallel ranges set at right angles to the street, and gables facing the street. The exterior is three storeys high with a symmetrical two-window front. The second floor has flat three-light mullioned windows with leaded glass; the window on the right is original, while the one on the left is a 20th-century copy. The first floor features original six-light (plus sidelights) ovolo-moulded mullioned oriel windows with ovolo-moulded sills, each supported by a pair of shaped and carved brackets with plastered coving in between. The left-hand window has old casements, while the other has an old casement for the central light and possibly original leaded lights for the side lights.
On the ground floor, there is an old moulded two-light casement window on the left and a similar copy on the right, both with pairs of old external shutters. The doorways in the centre are separated by a pier of rubble masonry and feature partly-glazed doors. The interior has not been inspected, but this pair of jet-tied 17th-century merchants' houses is rare in Cornwall and one of only four such buildings in Fowey, retaining interior features of interest.
