Description
ZENNOR SW 43 NE 4/278 Tregerthen Farmhouse adjoining - garden walls and pigs' house GV II Farmhouse, adjoining garden walls and pigs' house (or possibly well house). C17, remodelled in the C18, extended in the C19 and C20. Granite ashlar and granite rubble with granite dressings. Concrete tile roof with original ashlar stacks over the original coped gable ends with scrolled kneelers. Plan: irregular cruciform plan plus C20 wing at rear left. The main range is 3 rooms long, partition removed and therefore now only 2 rooms (now 2) with putative through passage position towards left. At right angles in front, left of middle, and at right angles to rear, right of middle, are later 1-room plan presumably service wings, perhaps added when the house was divided into 2 houses (now again 1 house). Built into the garden wall in front, left, and into C20 wing in position of C18 garden wall are 2 C17 square-headed doorways with hollow chamfers and run-out stops, possibly the original through-passage doorways. Exterior: 2 storeys. Regular 1:1:3 bay south front. Second from left bay is a projecting gable-ended wing. The doorway is in the fourth from left bay and is splayed internally, 4-pane sashes, otherwise C20 windows. Right-hand gable end has 2 blocked C17 single light windows. Interior: has C20 carpentry and joinery, the fireplaces were probably rebuilt in the C18 or C19. The garden walls are partly of coursed dressed masonry. In the rear courtyard north east of the house is a roofless building of primitive construction, probably a pigs' house but possibly a well house (there is a well just behind the rear wall). Part of an unspoiled coastal hamlet set in the ancient field system of this part of Cornwall.
