Tregerthen Farmhouse Adjoining Garden Walls And Pigs' House

Tregerthen Farmhouse, along with adjoining garden walls and a pigs' house, is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with remodels in the 18th century and extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of granite ashlar and granite rubble, featuring granite dressings, and has a concrete tile roof with original ashlar stacks over the coped gable ends, which include scrolled kneelers.

The building has an irregular cruciform plan, with a 20th-century wing added at the rear left. The main range is three rooms long, but a partition has been removed, resulting in two rooms. There is a potential through passage position towards the left. At right angles to the main range, there are later one-room service wings, likely added when the house was divided into two separate homes, but it has since been reverted to a single residence. Incorporated into the garden wall on the left and within the 20th-century wing, where the 18th-century garden wall once stood, are two 17th-century square-headed doorways with hollow chamfers and run-out stops, which may have been the original through-passage doorways.

The exterior features two storeys and a regular south front with a 1:1:3 bay arrangement. The second bay from the left is a projecting gable-ended wing. The doorway is located in the fourth bay from the left and is internally splayed, with four-pane sash windows, while the remaining windows are 20th-century. The right gable end has two blocked 17th-century single light windows.

Inside, the farmhouse contains 20th-century carpentry and joinery, and the fireplaces were likely rebuilt in the 18th or 19th centuries. The garden walls are partly made of coursed dressed masonry. In the rear courtyard, northeast of the house, there is a roofless building of primitive construction, which is probably a pigs' house but could also be a well house, as there is a well located just behind the rear wall. The farmhouse is part of an unspoiled coastal hamlet set within the ancient field system of this area of Cornwall.
