Description
Carnevas Farmhouse and the garden walls to the south date from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof with hipped ends and brick axial stacks. The farmhouse has a double depth plan with the entrance located to the right of center. It consists of three main rooms across the front, each heated by fireplaces on the rear walls. The kitchen is situated at the back of the left-hand room, the dairy at the back of the central room, and the stair at the back of the right-hand room.
The exterior is two storeys high with a striking four-window front elevation that includes original sash windows and dressed stone segmental arches above the openings. The entrance, positioned to the right of center, features a 19th-century door and a glazed timber porch from the 1840s, which has two-centred arched openings and a flat roof. The ground floor has hornless 12-pane sash windows, with two on the left and one on the right. The first floor has four 12-pane sashes, with the second sash having been replaced in the late 19th or 20th century.
Inside, the farmhouse retains complete original joinery and carpentry details. The two main rooms on the front left have original moulded plaster cornices, although the partition between them has been removed. The right-hand room features original moulded plasterwork and a chimney-piece. The stair has a wrought iron balustrade and is illuminated by a stair window with original painted glass depicting a farmyard scene. The kitchen at the rear left includes 19th-century joinery, such as a bench attached to the wall, and there are meat hooks in the kitchen and in a small cupboard outside the back door, likely for poultry.
The property also includes 19th-century stone rubble walls that enclose the garden to the front (south) of the house. Carnevas Farmhouse is an unusual example of a complete farmhouse from around 1800 and holds a prominent position in the landscape.
