Description
Porthcothan Cottage is a farmhouse, now divided into two houses, dating from around the mid 17th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with slate hanging on the right side and features a slate roof with a gable end on the right and a half hipped end on the left. The building has an end stack on the right and an axial stack to the left of the center, both with brick shafts. The layout consists of a three-room and cross or through passage plan, with the entrance located to the right of the center. The lower end on the right is heated by the end stack, while the hall to the left of the entrance is heated by the axial stack. It is uncertain if the inner room at the far left was heated.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a regular three-window front with the entrance to the right of the center. The ground floor openings feature dressed stone cambered arches. There is a 20th-century door with a hornless 19th-century 16-pane sash window to the right and two similar sashes to the left. On the first floor, there are three 16-pane sashes, with the left-hand sash from the 19th century lacking horns. A 20th-century extension is present on the left side. The interior is not accessible for viewing.
