Description

Bearah is a farmhouse that likely dates from the early 17th century, with some remodeling done in the mid to late 18th century and again in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with granite quoins and features a rag slate roof with gable ends and stone rubble end stacks.

The original layout of the building is uncertain, but it includes a front range with a two-room and cross passage plan, where the larger room is on the left. Both rooms are heated by end stacks. There is a staircase from the mid to late 18th century located at the rear of the passage, and a small room at the back of the right-hand room. A one-room wing at the back of the left-hand room is also heated by an end stack and includes a cloam oven projection.

The exterior is two storeys high and features an almost symmetrical three-window front. The ground floor has a 20th-century glazed door flanked by a 19th or 20th-century 20-pane sash window and a 19th-century 16-pane sash window, all with brick segmental arches. The first floor has two 16-pane sashes on either side of a 12-pane sash. On the gable end to the right, there is a granite roundel with a cross carved in relief, which appears to have the initial '-D' and the date 1823.

Inside, the left-hand room features a chamfered and ogee stopped timber lintel above the fireplace, with ashlar jambs. The ceiling beams have likely been replaced, probably in the 20th century. In the rear wing, earlier beams remain, including a large chamfered but unstopped cross beam with rough unmoulded floor joists. There are remnants of a granite surround to the fireplace with hollow chamfered jambs featuring ball and pyramid stops. The staircase from the 18th century has simple turned newels and a ramped deep moulded rail, with some balusters possibly replaced. The first floor and roof have not been inspected.
