Description

SOUTH HILL SX 37 SW 2/225 Well house 50m to south west of lower Manaton GV II

Holy well house. C17. Possibly built by Francis Manaton who rebuilt the mansion (qv lower Manaton) in 1687. Granite ashlar with granite segmental barrel vaulted roof. Rectangular in plan 6' 8" by 4' 6". Gable ends to liturgical east and west. West end with rectangular opening with hollow chamfered lintel and jambs. Inner 3 centred hollow chamfered arch. Water flows along runnel from spring into rectangular basin about 3' 9" deep. Western Morning News October 24, 1891.
