Description
Capstan is a capstan winch used for hauling fishing boats up the beach, dating from the mid to late 19th century. It may be a replacement or remodelling of an older structure. The walls are made of coursed granite rubble, with some dressed granite, including a reused 17th-century chamfered stone that serves as a bearing stone. The capstan is predominantly wooden, featuring an iron fastening, with the top bearing supported by a long beam carried on two granite piers. These piers are the only remnants of what were likely more complete enclosure walls. The capstan itself is in good condition and complete, and it was operated by eight men.
