Description
Newbridge Bridge is a road bridge built in 1843, serving as a crossing over a stream and a leat for Roskennals Mill. The bridge features a datestone inscribed with "E.H." and is a rebuilding of an older bridge, from which terminal refuges and parapets still remain. Constructed of granite ashlar with granite dressings, the bridge also includes rubble-walled remains of the earlier structure.
It has two spans: a wide span over the stream and a narrower span over the leat. At either end of the bridge, there are older semi-circular refuges that complement the circular parapet ends of the 1843 structure. The bridge has skew arches and round-headed arches, with projecting keystones above the principal arches. Each parapet features a string course with a tall ashlar blocking course, and inscriptions in relief are present over the main arch, stating "1843" on the south side and "EH" on the north side.
