Description
Lower Penpoll Mill is a water mill dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with metal sheeting on the gable end and features a corrugated roof with gabled ends. The building has a rectangular plan, extended to the southwest with an outshut that provides an additional two-storey store. The mill has three storeys and an attic, with an asymmetrical gable-ended southeast front where the roof continues down on the left in a catslide over the store.
The gable end of the southeast front has three timber stable plank doors on the ground, first, and second floors, arranged one above the other, with timber lintels. There is a blocked opening in the attic and a ground floor window to the right in a partly blocked opening, featuring an 18-pane fixed single light. In the lean-to on the left, the ground floor entrance is blocked with a timber stable door above, along with a blocked opening covered in metal sheeting.
On the right side, there are remains of a hybrid wheel, with the mill leat still flowing into the creek beneath two small rubble stone footbridges. On the left side, there is a two-storey symmetrical store front with three windows, large quoins on the southwest corner, a central timber door, and two flanking partly blocked openings with shutters and a small window. There are three openings with timber shutters above. The mill is believed to contain complete original machinery, though the interior has not been inspected. Additionally, there is an earlier mill cottage to the rear, which is in ruins.
