Description

Helset is a Grade II listed house, possibly dating from the 17th century, with a rear extension added in the mid-18th century. The building features slate-stone rubble that is rendered and painted on the front and side elevations. The roof is covered with bitumen-coated and cement-washed slate, originally hipped but modified to a flat top in the late 20th century. There are brick chimney stacks at each end, with a projecting stone rubble and brick stack heating an outshot on the right.

The house likely has a two-room and through passage plan, which was extended in the mid-18th century to include two additional rooms, maintaining the central passage. The rear elevation was probably refenestrated in the late 18th or early 19th century. A lean-to outshot was added on the right in the late 18th or early 19th century, which includes a kitchen heated by the projecting end stack. This outshot was further extended in the mid-20th century.

The house is two storeys tall with a symmetrical three-window front. It features a 20th-century part-glazed door set in a central gabled porch that is rendered and slate-hung. The windows are 20th-century 16-paned sashes. The rear elevation also has an almost symmetrical three-window front with early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sashes and crown glass. The front wall on the left has been partly rebuilt. The ground floor openings have dressed stone flat arches with key stones, and there is a 20th-century door to the right of the centre. The first floor has a central dressed stone round arch leading to a stair window with a 16-pane sash.

Inside, the partitions remain intact. There are 20th-century fireplaces, 19th-century four-paned doors, and a 19th-century stair located in the wide central passage, featuring a turned newel and stick balusters. The roof structure has not been inspected.
