Description

Higher Tregaddra Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating to 1721. It is constructed of partly dressed painted serpentine and elvan, roughly coursed with large blocks spaced with snecks, with slate sills and granite lintels (inserted around 1985). The building has steep dry Delabole slate roofs with tall serpentine ashlar chimney stacks over each original gable end. Initially, the plan was likely a T-shaped single depth, with a parlour to the left and a larger hall/kitchen to the right, connected by a passage. This passage leads to a large stair and service room projection at the rear middle. Around the late 18th or early 19th century, it was extended by one bay to the right of the kitchen, and a service wing was added at right angles to the rear of the parlour, parallel to, adjoining, and projecting beyond the original rear wing. The south front is roughly 4 windows wide, with a nearly symmetrical front of 3 windows belonging to the original house and a narrower 1-window front to the circa late 18th-early 19th century extension on the right. The original front includes a datestone with “I P AD 1721” above the original doorway, which has a top-glazed 3-pane door. A large buttress sits to the right of the doorway. The original square window opening above the doorway remains, although other window openings have been reduced in width, originally being very wide, now square. The house now has 12-pane 2-light casements (20th century) on the original front, and 12-pane horned sashes (20th century) on the extension. The interior has been largely renewed around 1985, but retains a large hearth in the kitchen. The tall chimneys are a noteworthy feature. As a dated early 18th century farmhouse, it is of interest when compared to other farmhouses nearby, such as Tregithew (dated 1726) and Kestle (dated 1722 and 1744), both in Manaccan parish.
